In Regards to the Process | Artist Statement of Drew Landon Harris [2013]

In the Space Between pieces (including Aqua Vitae), there is an underlying aesthetic value in the concept of equality. The exact dimensions of a pieces’ supports consequently define the composition. The linearity [of the composition] compliments the equality of the supports as well as the composition itself. Flaws [or the lack there of] define perfection in life, thus the supports are created from organic and flawed wood. This dichotomy is also seen in the idea that the canvases are crafted to the exact angle and stretched methodically however it is all done with the hands of man.  This is the conceptual basis to the pieces’ supports. 

With an influence in natural balance and the study of alchemy, the triangle is the sign for perfection. We all have an inherent view of the perfection of triangularity through a collective unconscious which is based off of archaic archetypes.

Alongside this preexisting understanding is an innate and insatiable desire to create and to refine and grow. This process includes tests of different methodologies and even studies into different aesthetics and responses. In Aqua Vitae, and similar pieces, this can be seen with the reactive lighting. This brings the audience into the piece bridging the gap between a two dimensional plane and a fully immersive installation. It also is a study on visual light and it’s effects on the surrounding space and how the space interacts with it.
